Re: 80% of Artists on Spotify won't get paid anything.

People mention the evil capitalism, when large teams of smart people charge cheesburger and coffee money to allow us to do things we would never ever be able to accomplish without their ingenuity and cheapo prices  I've noticed you're pretty quick to defend ... whatever it is you're defending...

Re: 80% of Artists on Spotify won't get paid anything.

... 500 streams round the world but you could have got more money selling a a couple of CDR's at a local gig for the price of a beer each. I think that is a good point. There is more money to be made for musicians if the middle man is cut out. We might hear about the benefits of the free market, bu...

Re: Linux PC Builds for Audio Production. Recommended Hardware

Avoid like the plague hardware that needs "special" drivers (especially for Midi) and/or software to configure it. Even if it's linux software. what's wrong with such devices and software for them? There will come a day that in a new OS your closed source proprietary driver won't work any...

I use Intel CPUs with integrated graphics. Less power consumption, no trouble at all.

You might want to edit video, in which case a graphics card can help. If it's a choice between AMD and Nvidia, go for AMD.

Re: Linux PC Builds for Audio Production. Recommended Hardware

I posted a thread about building my Linux Audio Workstation . It's two years on, and I'm still pleased with what I built. I have upgraded and added a few bits, there was a problem with a BIOS update and I found that I got xruns if I put my graphics card in the second slot. Other than that, my box is...

Re: Wireplumber realtme problem and Realtime tweaks for Pro Audio

I'm neutral about Pipewire. I may try it, I may not. My system works, so why would I? I think the problem it addresses, and this is very much for new users/out the box/that sort of thing is the classic "I've got Ardour working, now my browser is bust". OK, so you and I know that that is a ...

Re: Firewire today? miniPc for MAO?

Is there any difference between thunderbolt and usb-C ? ... Yes. USB C is a connector. Thunderbolt is a protocol. A USB C connector can be used for different protocols -- USB 3.1, Thunderbolt, Display Port over USB, even on audio interfaces USB 2.0. Usually Thunderbolt ports have a lightning flash ...

Re: Rick's Beato's "52 year overnight success" video

Perhaps I should clarify that I wouldn't generally recommend The Beato Book as a first theory book. The Beato Book assumes the reader already knows the basics of music theory. There is an element of a con in the way Beato presents the book. I like Beato's guitar lines. He'll play something interesti...

Re: Rick's Beato's "52 year overnight success" video

They're not bad videos. He's become a Youtuber, though, because his music is crap. :D I bought the digital Beato book when it was on offer, and the theory is fine --- there's a lot of ideas. The digital Beato book includes some of Rick's compositions to illustrate e.g. modes. They're not great. Loos...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

Just one question at this stage of pipewire development, and in particular, for midi playback and recording. Is it sample accurate, like JACK? I see that wtay has said yes. I don't know if sample accurate makes a whole lot of sense for MIDI. At 120bpm, yes, every beat lines up with a sample. There ...

Re: Studio One - Linux version

It's bonkers to charge for a beta version. This means the Linux beta is open to 1) people who already use Studio One on Mac or Windows 2) Linux users who can try the 30 day demo. The questions that interest me are -- "Why?" and "Why now?" Is it a coincidence that another commerci...
