Well I got it sorted. For me and I guess anyone else using Ununtu 9.1 (including studio) adding the debian squeeze repo and installing libasound2-plugins (1.0.21) from debian added all the needed plugins. Apparently its a deliberate decision by Canonical to take all of the below out of libasound2-p...

MXL 990 is low-cost line. I have MXL 2006, only a bit more expensive but better and superb for acoustic-guitar too

wow, I installed ubutu-studio from a ubtunu 9.10 minimal installation. no problems so far. first impression: latency seems as did go down once more :-) ...... i could do one-track record in ardour with 2,9ms without xrun - an this is with a USB1-device (M-audio DUO). perhaps i will have to revidate ...

what i did is:
i installed ubuntu hardy minimal; added the 64studio repros, installed kdm and kde 3 and fluxbox.....and it works great

all the solutions for vst on linux use wine because wine is the way to run win-dose programs on linux
