Re: Launchkey Mini or MPK Mini Mk3 for use with Ardour?

I have the Mk2 version of the MPK mini, and it works fine.

Re: New Laptop Advice April 2022

foodforester1 Have you made your decision already? I'm asking because I just heard a talk from the latest Debconf from a guy who also works for Lenovo. He had a list of about 30 machines which all run Linux. My wife has an L series notebook, they're very nice and sturdy, not much difference to the ...

Re: Beginner - I want to move my songs from my piano to paper

Hi Joseph, as a beginner with music in computers, you *do* still know that when setting up a MIDI channel (for instance, in Ardour like already recommended), you also need to select an instrument in case you want to hear anything? MIDI wouldn't transport the sounds from your Casio piano, only the no...

Probably not directly related to this, but when buying/considering new hardware, beware... just wrote about it... see https://wolfgang.lonien.de/2022/07/try-before-you-buy/

Re: total newb

The question can't be answered, as there is no "best" for everyone, and for every task. For me (mostly audio, very rarely MIDI), Ardour is by far the best of the cheap ones, you probably get an older version of it with your distribution of choice without paying anything, it runs on any OS,...

Re: Ardour Linux Audio - 2022 still no useful pitch correction plugin like Melodyne available ?

What about https://x42-plugins.com/x42/x42-autotune? I've tried that - and also Reaper's ReTune - with my upright bass lately, and both aren't very good. Never had Melodyne, and never will - because like Glen said, pros don't need these tools IMO (especially us bassists who have far longer scale le...

Re: Jammin....

Jamin is nice and still works, both as a plugin on the master bus, or externally wired as it was designed... However, I don't think it's really needed in these days anymore. Ardour can output to specific 'targets' like Apple (-16LUFS), Amazon, Spotify, and the likes, and if you really need an eq or ...

Re: How to detect which notes are played? (like in Rocksmith/Yousician)

I sometimes use this if I can't figure out the chords of a song:

Lots of possibilities with these vamp plugins, and it all seems to be open source (which I haven't checked tho)

I'd suggest to use the monitor bus instead of the master track. That way, you can leave it on during export. Tried that with both Reaper and Ardour, both work fine.

Re: Pipewire, should I try it ? ( tumbleweed)

I haven't seen Suse since a while, but I think Tumbleweed is a rolling release distro, like Arch?

On Arch I'm using pipewire without any problems, did my last recordings with that one instead of the usual Jack on my Debian stable. No worries at all, so you might just give it a try.

Cheers,
Wolfgang

Re: Any Distro Hoppers Out There?

Well I think in the beginning we all have been distro hoppers... Like many in my country, I started out with Suse. Then later on I tried Red Hat, but found it both to be too far on the commercial side of things, and me finding myself in what was called RPM hell during that time. So I tried some of t...

Trying it on Arch, and I think there's helvum which is a Carla/Catia/QJackctl replace wannabe. Doesn't seem quite ready IMO, but it's a start...

Re: New Laptop Advice April 2022

a Radeon 7 5700G, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD if he gets a machine with a current AMD or Intel desktop CPU (instead of an S, H, P, or even U series), it's going to rapidly deplete his power source. Good point Jeff, I forgot that. So yes, a notebook is the better alternative in that case, even tho my desktop ...

Re: New Laptop Advice April 2022

I had to look up your AMD A4-9120e processor and the machine, seems to be a bit underpowered for real time stuff like music... But first off, you don't need a dedicated graphics card, none of our machines have them. An Intel Core i5 or better (same for the newer Radeon G processors) will do music ju...
