Re: What DAW should I use in 2021?
Oh man, what DAW to use.. I've been on Linux for years and I still haven't found one. I still use FL Studio in Wine! That's not a Linux problem though. Nothing compares to it on any platform so I'm stuck with this situation. Anyway, isn't Mixcraft kinda like Garageband? I haven't used it but I got t...

Re: Pulse Effects - a limiter for bass?
First of all, if they're little speakers then there wont be much low end on them. What you're hearing might be more around the 200-250Hz area which helps give the impression of more bass on small speakers. Anyway, what you want is a multiband limiter. You want to set it up so that only the low band ...

Re: shimmer reverb
Thanks for posting those, I enjoyed both those tracks, particularly the postrock one. I still don't understand what postrock is though. Do the musicians post all their parts separately to be subsequently mixed, or is it music to listen to while sitting on a post? but seriously, I find it ...

Re: shimmer reverb
@Death I would love to hear your music! Where can I find it? Very interested to hear what you do with the shimmer stuff. Thanks I'll give you a couple of examples :) Here's one with a very noticeable Shimmer effect: https://soundcloud.com/alonewolfsmusic/alonewolf-its-not-over And here's one where ...

Re: Linux PC Builds for Audio Production. Recommended Hardware
If it's just for music then you could make something good for less than 1k if we're just talking about the computer itself. If you tell me your budget and needs I can put together a build for you on PC part picker as long as it lets me share a build without needing an account (I've never tried that ...

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021
I haven't found it makes a huge amount of difference most of the time. I only notice the difference at high DSP loads when the RT kernel allows a bit more to be squeezed out of the hardware without xruns. Also my hardware is pretty old so processing power doesn't seem to be a factor :) Interesting....

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021
There are three kinds of kernel : (1)generic or stock, (2)low latency and (3)real time. If I do : $ uname -a Linux SiriusC 5.9.1-rt20-1-rt #1 SMP PREEMPT_RT Thu, 29 Oct 2020 11:56:25 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linu I get PREEMPT_RT -- that is a realtime kernel. Low latency says PREEMPT and a stock kernel say...

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021
Tweaking for games and tweaking for audio may have different needs. Dunno, not a a gamer. There is however, no need to restrict yourself to just one kernel. You can have a kernel patched for audio and other patched for games or even ones patched for performance on specific games. Each is just a reb...

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021
@JamesPeters How 'Realtime' is the Manjaro RT kernel? What sort of latency difference do you get? There's different levels with these type of kernels and the lower latency they are, the bigger the performance hit. The standard Manjaro kernel gives me the same latency as what the low latency kernel o...

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021
I don't use any of the music distros because there's always something I don't like about them. They all seem to be point releases for a start, like Ubuntu and you've already experienced one of the things I hate about point releases - upgrades that never work properly. Another thing is that I don't a...

Re: shimmer reverb
How do people usually use shimmer reverb? Single instrument, groups, or whole mix? Tracks I've heard that seem to use it have maybe a synth patch in the background with lots of shimmer and shorter reverbs on other instruments. Although one album I have, The beautiful "Birds of Passage - The De...

Re: shimmer reverb
I got the Valhalla Supermassive working nicely with LinVST so probably the Valhalla Shimmer mentioned in that article would work too. I use Valhalla Shimmer in Wine with FL Studio and it works great. I'd love to see a Linux native plugin that can do the same thing though. Shimmer is very good at wh...

Re: FOSS Replacement for Waves MaxxBass?
Depending on these speakers, there is a limit to how low they can go. Trying to generate really low basses could damage/destroy your speakers so be careful with low frequency generators, I've been there and killed cheap desktop speakers :!: Yeh that's what I was getting at. You need to enhance the ...
