Re: Plugin development philosophy

I have to admit that at least 50% of my motivation for starting this thread is that I want to make an effect plugin called "Tallow". It would have two control sections: Saturated . . . Fat. I imagine the saturation stage mostly just being TAP tube warmth, and then the fatten stage would mo...

TAP Tubewarmth

Funny thing, I discovered that TAP Tubewarmth is the algorithm that does most of the work in Calf Bass Enhancer. The rest of that calf plugin is just gain, low pass, and high pass.

Re: Plugin development philosophy

Next question: Should dials show numeric values, or should numbers be hidden to encourage "trust your ears"?

Re: Plugin development philosophy

@GMaq, do you have any opinions about this? As somebody who curates plugins for AVLinux, would it be beneficial to have more "just add magic" plugins? Or are we at a point that Linux has a too-many-plugins problem?

Re: Plugin development philosophy

The ideal, is that we can combine both into one software plugin these days, allowing for modular synths with full effects and everything saved to a simple patch. :) You can do that with Carla, which allows you to load any combination of plugins and then save them as a preset. Rakarrack is also kind...

Re: Plugin development philosophy

Thanks Nils, that's kind of what I want to do. Here are some things that I imagine for a new plugin suite: Multi-stage effects - perform "magic" without forcing people to think too hard about stacking components Nice user interface - some controls to play with, but not so many that it's ov...

Plugin development philosophy

I've been looking at the implementations of several open source audio plugin suites ( airwindows , bluelab , calf , lsp , and tap ) to see what I can learn about how they do different dsp effects. Some plugins follow a "unix philosophy" of doing just one thing well, which allows a musician...

I wanted to install cadence/catia/claudia. I'm using Ubuntu 22.04, and APT can't find any of the three applications.

The KXStudio Repositories should get you sorted out.

Re: CALF plugins?

As an opposite, I'm working on the alternative implementations of plugins available in Calf tools. The recent one is the Flanger tool which allows to do much more than Calf's one allows. I don't aim to copy-paste the things, I always aim to improve the things that already exist. Thanks, Vladimir. Y...

Re: CALF plugins?

The reason I asked is because sometimes I get an itch to develop a new plugin. I don't think I'm up to the task of updating all the calf plugins such that they don't use gtk2, but I was thinking that I could drop one of the algorithms into a new plugin that would hopefully not have some of the probl...

Hopefully I will get myself a proper guitar at some point.

Another option is to collaborate with a guitarist... Like our very own @Rainmak3r.

Are there any effects in the CALF collection that don't have a suitable replacement among Airwindows, LSP Plugins, x42 plugins, etc?

Painful?

Well, @Phitar did just make an analogy about a cross-species heart transplant. A proper same-species heart is definitely in order, but the new transplant isn't exactly painless.
