Re: Debian 11 Bullseye QTractor won't start

Never buy a Chr.b. to run Linux. I second this. When I see comments online that Chromebooks make great Linux laptops, I assume the posters have never actually tried to run a full-fledged Linux desktop on a Chromebook. The Linux functionality built into ChromeOS only incorporates some command line t...

Re: New Laptop Advice April 2022

I can understand your feelings given your experience, but the situation has changed over the years. Today, the likelihood of a run-on-the-mill laptop that houses an Intel processor, Intel Graphics, and an Intel WiFi/BT module being fully functional on Linux is pretty much 100%. In my experience, th...

Re: New Laptop Advice April 2022

[...] You are much better off buying a Windows laptop that costs the same as the Chromebook you are considering, and just wiping Windows off of it. [...] Everybody has his own experiences. A Chromebook is far, far from ideal but it has a Linux kernel. One has no idea if all the hardware on a Window...

Re: New Laptop Advice April 2022

@foodforester1: I wouldn't worry about the specs of your new computer. In my experience the hardest part is actually finding a laptop that supports Linux in every way. Well, an affordable laptop that is. A cheap desktop PC (for, say $400) will simply work 90% to 99% of the time. And any new compute...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett Gen 2/3 Control Panel GUI

I don't own one of these devices, but I still wanted to compliment you on the work you've done. The GUI looks fantastic and appears very easy to use and understand. You have done a great service to owners of this line of audio interfaces, and I hope they reward you for your efforts.

Behringer FLOW 8

Despite a lot of Behringer devices functioning on Linux, they typically shy away from claiming Linux compatibility. The "FLOW 8" was released earlier this year, and on their product page it states: "All Input signals and the Main stereo mix can be sent to audio applications on a Mac-,...

Re: Behringer UMC 1820 - New device is ace!

What version of the Liquorix kernel were you using before the update? I am curious if the USB audio improvements that were incorporated into the 5.15 and 5.16 kernels lead to the performance gain you measured.

Re: Xruns with low DSP & CPU loads?

I have two laptops with similar processors and the same amount of RAM, OS, and attached hardware. I can set one to a 64 buffer size with no xruns, and the other can only get down to 256 (128 causes occasional xruns). No amount of software tweaking does anything to improve its performance. I use a US...

Re: disco dsp obx xd 2.4 free for used not commercial

I agree. I don't think "non-commercial use" slapped on their download page likely passes legal scrutiny, and that topic is a fair point of discussion on this forum. However, the OP was accused of spreading misinformation when they were only passing along what was on the download page, and ...

Re: disco dsp obx xd 2.4 free for used not commercial

I installed it, and the binary has no attached license that pops up during installation or as a separate file, so it would seem the binary is also licensed as GPLv3. While I think it would be difficult to enforce legally, it seems clear the author wishes for it to remain with private individuals rat...

Re: advice for nvidia card sufferer

I had a desktop with a Nvidia card years ago, and I had to use their proprietary driver and check a box in the Nvidia settings menu for "High Performance" (or something along those lines) before things worked smoothly. If that setting wasn't selected, I'd get xruns galore even if everythin...

Re: AVL-MXE 2021.05.22 ISO Update Released!

I had a spare 80GB SSD, and the drive on the x230 is super quick to swap out, so I installed AVL on it. After booting into the new system, the docking station worked fine. I don't know why the live ISO didn't like it, but installing the OS to a SSD solved the issue I was having. As a quick test, I s...

Re: AVL-MXE 2021.05.22 ISO Update Released!

Jaaxx If I understand correctly, GMaq was waiting on Ardour 6.7, which was released two days ago and is included in this ISO release. GMaq Thank you for your continued efforts on this project. It is quite impressive. I was wondering, though, if you could wager a guess why the live ISO isn't working...

Re: Motu 8.pre alsa driver for linux

From what I saw, Motu doesn't list it as class compliant or iOS compatible. There is a download for "drivers and software" for Mac, which suggests it probably isn't. ALSA drivers are built into the kernel, so if it isn't working out of the box with a recent kernel, it will probably never w...
