Re: Hi, I'm the author of BackupBand
Hi, I'm the author of this post. I can confirm that BackupBand is probably very good and stable software, the only reason I'm not using it anymore is because it doesn't have darkmode, or a low contrast mostly grey light mode, it doesn't have a Github readme with emojis and there's no tar.gz version....

Re: Backup Band bug
It probably found JACK on your system and refuses to work with it. What you need to do is backup Backup band, then uninstall JACK, then bring Backup Band back up, and see if it solves the issue.

Re: Kx as a distrib is over - what next for ubuntu users?
I'm going to try adding the KXStudio repositories, although it looks like it's discouraged. I'll try anyway. Why it's "discouraged"? A quick search showed some posts discouraging it for Ubuntu Studio specifically. I'm not sure if it's still relevant and/or whether the US devs just haven't...

Re: Kx as a distrib is over - what next for ubuntu users?
I just installed Ubuntu Studio 22.04 this week and it has been a very pleasant experience thus far. It looks and feels kind of like a shiny new KXStudio (what with it using KDE and all). I was able to install it and set up my USB audio interface and still have time for some editing in Ardour before ...

Re: Nice article on Flatpak, Snap, AppImage, Docker and Steam
I think the tendency is that after a few years of using Linux, users will end up on a rolling release. All converges to Archlinux with just system packages. That, or you get comfortable and switch to Linux Mint :P Their take on Snap: (See Snap section) https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3906 In Linux Mi...

Re: basic questions about jack and midi
As far as I can tell, you are using the "seq" MIDI Driver setting in QJackCtl. This bridges ALSA and JACK MIDI in the way you experience, with ports not being named automatically. The way I usually do it is to disable the MIDI Driver setting in QJackCtl (set it to "None"). This w...

You can also try Konfyt which allows you to create patches with layers of soundfonts (sf2) and SFZ instruments. http://www.noedig.co.za/konfyt/ Source: https://github.com/noedigcode/konfyt Releases (deb file built for Linux Mint / Ubuntu 20.04): https://github.com/noedigcode/konfyt/releases This wil...

Re: How to detect which notes are played? (like in Rocksmith/Yousician)
Incidentally I just saw this this morning: https://basicpitch.spotify.com/ Spotify released an open source tool to convert music (audio) to MIDI. I think you can install it with PIP to use in Python. MOD devices also brought out a new plugin to detect which notes are played on a guitar, so you can p...

Re: Compiling mididings in 2022. HELP!!!
There are a few forks that contain various fixes to the original repo. I have one in which I collected a few fixes and some of my own: https://github.com/noedigcode/mididings The solution to your problem mentioned in the previous post is also mentioned in my readme (note that I was using Python 3.8,...

Re: live kontakt instrument without xruns - pipe dream?
If your system isn't yet tuned for low audio latency, start there first with the advice above or by using a pro audio dedicated distro like AVLinux. You could experiment with a Wine standalone app and as a plugin with the different Wine plugin bridges like yabridge, Carla, etc. Alternatively, you co...

Re: Carla, sf2, sfz, banks and presets....
You can try Konfyt: https://github.com/noedigcode/konfyt I created it specifically to easily browse sf2 presets and sfz files and to easily and quickly create and switch between different patches. It's aimed at live keyboard playing, but you could just as well use it with a DAW when creating music i...
