Re: List of JACK Frame & Period settings ideal for USB inter
Looks good! Thanks! Just one thing, I think you can't license an article in the Wiki the way you'd want to. The whole Wiki is CC by-nc-sa licensed at the moment and I'm not sure what the implications are if you impose a different license on an article. Oh, I didn't know - I'll change it. I was just...

Re: Good working live 4 out usb soundcard for KXStudio?
Here is a thread on the Focusrite offering.

I own the 2i2 with 2 in 2 out and "out of the box" would describe its workings well.

AutoStatic, I put it into a Wiki entry as you suggested. (didn't figure out how to do tables yet, but I will delve more deeply into the documentation for the wiki syntax later.) http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php?id=list_of_jack_frame_period_settings_ideal_for_usb_interface Thanks for the feedb...

List of JACK Frame & Period settings ideal for USB interface
(This was split off by me from the SP/DIF discussion as it seemed appropriate to place this into its own thread.) Since in Cadence you can over-ride the drop-down menu selections and type-in your own custom frames entry, you can enter the numbers below and thus achieve an even multiple of 1ms (that ...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - success!
In the case of USB, JACK works best if the software latency is a multiple of 1ms. You can only achieve this if the sample rate is 48kHz, 96kHz or 192kHz BTW - It seems that 44100 actually does have two frame rates that come out even for USB! (Not sure these would really work in practicality...) 147...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - success!
I entered the forumla (frames/sample rate)*period into a spreadsheet and found some interesting numbers for both 2 and 3 periods that make even multiples of 1ms for USB use in Cadence, taking advantage of the ability to enter arbitrary numbers in there. To avoid a double post, here is the spreadshee...

Thanks, falkTX. So, the numbers to go with are the ones the formula derives, then. That is handy to know!

Re: Enable S/PDIF PCM with JACK Audio by adding IEC958 in KM
That formula is applicable to all sound cards, btw - but the 1ms trick is USB specific.... It's about polling rates IIRC. USB was never intended for realtime stuff..... We just get away with it thanks to excess bandwidth ;) Ahh! Well, I'm not surprised hearing that. I wonder why Cadence reports a d...

Re: Enable S/PDIF PCM with JACK Audio by adding IEC958 in KM
AutoStatic just helped me out hugely by sharing this post: http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10142&p=37495#p32773 He explains the formula for USB devices. (frames/sample rate)*period = theoretical latency. With USB devices, he says, you want this number to be an even multiple...

See this post: http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10142&p=37495#p32773 And my response to that: http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10142&p=37495#p37495 It shows how to "do the math" to compute the frames buffer, periods and sample rate together...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - success!
Wow, that's nice to know! That means the Scarlett can achieve lower latencies than my revered UA-25 and probably with lower DSP load too. So in case I'd need a replacement I know where to look ;) I just used your calculations and set the FocusRite 2i2 USB interface to 24 frames, 2 periods at 48000 ...

I just figured the gui version of alsamixer reads and writes the config file for you. Which one is it for alsamixer? And where is it? I'll look for the version you mentioned. EDIT - looked it up - what the heck is this thing??? http://www.gnu.org/software/ncurses/ I ran away with my tail between my ...

Re: Enable S/PDIF PCM with JACK Audio by adding IEC958 in KM
Thanks, Todd! I turned it off in Kmix and installed alsamixergui and switched it on. I'm not sure what the benefit is over using Kmix but I was concerned that I was seeing xruns pop up the other way. Only one so far - with the same settings - using alsamixergui. Is it routing things differently? Terry

Re: KXStudio needs a P.R. person
I'm on the team for the open-source CamStudio screen recording application for Windows as a help-desk guy for a few years now. I got into that because a) I believed in the "mission" of the software, b) really respected the project leaders and programmers and c) naturally shared from a new ...
