mega xruns using kde, logged out and logged into Fluxbox, one xun when I launched Ardour and off I went to record 5 tracks using Hydrogen, Qsynth and dssi-vst hosting 2 vst plugins all at the same time.
FluxBox is perfect for audio...

brummer, thank you, thank you! I've been using feFIR via wine to load the impulse response but as we all know that these vsts are not too stable on linux and crashes at some crucial points of recording.
I will give it a try and give you feedback.
