I don't think that it is the Indian tabla. I don't hear sounds that I associate with that.
There is a drum sometimes called Egyptian tabla, a single-headed drum. I'm no percussion expert, but it reminds me of that.

Re: The Friday Interview
I was there to take carnatic singing and music lessons over an extended period of time. Wonderful. I did sit in mridangam class, in London, for some years, and used to regularly play morsing with youngsters, but really did not progress much beyond adi talam samam eddupu (sorry to others for technic...

Re: The Friday Interview
Great! Thanks for another interesting Friday.
Carnatic (South Indian) Classical music is a rare taste. How nice to see it on Nil's list. I'm not Indian, but I live here in Chennai, and attend quite a few Carnatic concerts --- on average, about two a week.

Re: looking for a ubuntu substitute
The basis of my installation is Ubuntu Studio (12.04). I do not want Unity, but then, I also do not want KDE, so I have a limited KXStudio repository install on top. I also have MATE desktop. So some might say it's a bit of a mixed up mess! But it illustrates that the freedoms are extensive. Next ti...

Re: Lets get our favorite KXStudio guy paid!
Thanks, I hadn't looked and didn't know there was a subscription. It is an almost shamefully small amount. Does it even buy a beer in Europe? But I guess every little counts, and it is a heap better than donating nothing because a bigger donation feels unaffordable. So I joined you in the five-euro ...

Re: Music player frustrations
Gapless used to be a real pain to find. It seems that many players have now caught up with that simple requirement, but, when it was painful I settled on and stuck with... Aqualung. Not only plays MP3 gapless, but plays mixed file types gapless. I listen to live concert recordings and classical musi...

I'm on an Echo Audiofire2 ...so our differences should be ones of scale only. I have had all kinds of odd problems, like having to unplug and reconnect the firewire cable --- but they have all been to do with getting the basic jack/firewire thing to work, none of them have resulted in part working a...

I was just getting that I've worn out the internet feeling --- and The Friday Interview popped up!
Meeting a newcomer, for me, this time, and enjoying that feeling a non-musician gets seeing musicians play new instruments and use new tools.

Re: 3.11-lowlatency kernel
Mine is HD4290. I did recover without a full re-install by just reverting to booting the it-works kernel and then following the AMD instructions to [re-]install the appropriate Catalyst version. By the way, I make sure I have full backups (seperate) of / and /home before any possibly-critical upgrad...

Re: youtube sound
I still have some problems autostarting cadence/JACK with firewire. I also alternate between a Firewire interface and a USB DAC, depending on what I'm doing, so I always start up manually. However, If I remember rightly, if you select to "Autostart JACK" then the system remembers what brid...
