Re: NEW SETUP: audio problems, sometimes works sometimes no

Woah! New update: I put the thing to sleep and when it woke up, it had some kernel error notification with a full screen of white text on black. There were some bits mentioning something about audio maybe but I couldn't make sense of any of it. I restarted, and got a different error that seems weird...

Re: NEW SETUP: audio problems, sometimes works sometimes no

Thanks, but before I check those things, let me add this: I want to be able to just run basic stuff that I could run before (Audacity, Musescore, sound in Firefox) without necessarily setting up everything I might do for studio work. I say this because at least sometimes — well, right now for instan...

NEW SETUP: audio problems, sometimes works sometimes no

Ok, so I thought my Mint KDE + KXStudio setup was flawless... it worked at lunchtime. Then when it really mattered, Audacity had no sound output. The system Multimedia settings put out audio for testing some of the devices in the list, but not for others, and in some cases it seemed to freeze when I...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

Thanks, SR! I appreciate hearing your perspective. I'm happy to report that I think I've successfully installed Linux Mint KDE w/ KXStudio, and I used RedoBackup (super tool, very happy) to make a backup in case I mess anything up again. We'll see how it goes. So far, all is smooth!

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

The facts are dogmatic. Our leadership is on record as desiring energy costs to skyrocket, so every action and inaction is calculated to help attain that goal. Success is at hand. Facts are not dogmatic, that's nonsense. Facts are facts, they don't have dogma. The garbage statement you just wrote a...

Re: Remix_OS

I really like Remix OS for it's great audio set-up with REAPER, but it doesn't have the wifi working for me, so it is very frustrating. Also, Xfce seems to lack some GUI controls that I really like in KDE, such as fine-tuned control for use of my multitouch trackpad. The whole Cairo launcher thing i...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

Sorry, but I'm with Grayson partially... you want to get people to care about politics? You can't just rant about things and express simplistic dogma upon any mention of politics. It is utter nonsense to just say that a particular political campaign slogan is to blame for some complex economic pheno...

Re: 64 vs 32

What about the reference in this article http://www.penguinproducer.com/2011/12/ ... th-ubuntu/ that mentions 32 as necessary to smoothly run Windows VST plugins? Is that an issue?

64 vs 32

Sorry, I don't know how to search for 64 vs 32 in past discussions because I can't search for this in the search box... If I have only 4GB of RAM, am I best off being conservative and going with a 32-bit distro? That's my impression, like especially to run 32-bit plugins... but I know 32-bit can run...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

Thanks so much, everyone! That sort of clear advice (like both the necessary terminal command and the explanation for my comprehension) is exactly what I need. As to running multiple distros, I'm really not sure about it. My inclination is to get the best functional thing, learn my way around it, an...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

So, I tried Remix OS... Looks great, I'm happy REAPER runs so well... REAPER has been my main DAW now and will continue to be unless I'm won over by Bitwig... HOWEVER, Remix OS didn't automatically connect to my wifi, I tried a lot of things, didn't know what was going on... I couldn't find any obvi...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

Sounds like politics to me. There's the waste-of-time politics of fussing over labels and group affiliation and more, and then there's politics that matter: like the importance of it being legal for you to root your phone. Anyway, I guess Arch is not for me then. I want to learn to be more comfortab...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac

Thanks, Grayson. But actually, I'm much more comfortable with a statement that life involves compromises than a statement that we should ignore politics. We should reject dogma , I'll give you that, but politics matter — the entire idea of being able to control my computer and not have to have some ...

Hi — newly switching from Mac

Hi everyone, I have been a Mac user all my computing life. I have always been sympathetic to concerns about freedom but also about respecting human psychology in all its quirks. A good aesthetic and natural computer interface is valuable to me, but not at the expense of liberty. I've been really unc...
