Re: Studio monitors

Well I use Voxengo SPAN (which doesn't have a Linux version) with the mastering preset. The reason for using the mastering preset is that it sets the response to be quite slow and averaged out with much less detail in it so you won't see harmonics spiking up everywhere. This is exactly what you want...

Flatpaks can access any directory without permission?

Can someone help me clarify how Flatpak works? I thought Flatpak sandboxed your programs so they couldn't access files or folders outside of the sandbox unless you specifically granted access to them via Flatseal or another method. So for this reason, I have decided to run the Flatpak version of Ste...

Re: Studio monitors

Ah god yeh... Adding too much low end is something I always used to do! It takes you a while to learn how much to use, how to shape it and how to control it. EQ & compression are the main tools of mixing and good use of them will really help you to shape the low end and avoid all the mess with i...

Re: Studio monitors

My monitors were about £350 new and I always get comments about how nice my mixes are. I think my mixes are decent but there are people who can do way better in my opinion, but I do know I'm not producing bad mixes which is pretty cool with my budget and mixing environment considered :) Getting to k...

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021

I haven't used anything from Sennheiser. The only mixing headphones I've ever owned are my Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro. I bought these about 9 years ago and have been using them all the time since. They're very comfortable, you can buy spare parts for them from Beyerdyamic last I checked and they sound r...

Re: Which Linux Distro should i choose for Music production 2021

Very interesting. Tweakers said exactly the same. An open-backed headphone sounds better. But you will hear more sounds around you, the part why I prefer a closed one. :) Open backs or semi-open backs are better for hearing the stereo image because left is able to bleed into right & right into ...

Re: Using more than one audio program

Do I need to do all this wiring stuff if I use the studio control in Ubuntu studio? I see that there is a Carla tab... do I need to configure that? I'm hoping someone with more experience can help run you through the steps. The only other thing I can say is that I remember having Cadence installed ...

Re: Using more than one audio program

Using ALSA will make Ardour take exclusive control of the soundcard. Use JACK to share the soundcard with other applications. Ubuntu Studio has the Studio Controls app that makes it easy to start JACK and automatically run the various bridges needed for PulseAudio (used by normal desktop apps like ...

Re: Using more than one audio program

I remember having an issue like this years ago. I think it was something to do with my audio software gaining exclusive control of the audio interface. I'm sure I was using Jack as well. It looks like you're using ALSA here so I'm not sure how you'd go about configuration. I think I had to configure...

Re: span

Well, some graphical EQs can actually make decent spectral analysers. But have you tried checking these websites for plugin ideas?:

Re: span

Sorry, not the answer you're looking for but I also mix in a crap room and I have some really nice open-back headphones (Beyerdynamic DT880) for mixing with which I trust way more than my monitors due to the room situation. The monitors are a bit more useful for the stereofield though and also give ...

Re: GeekosDaw broke my sound ?

Ah yeh that's it.. I should know because I've done it enough times  By the way, if you ever set the D.O.C.P/XMP and find the RAM is unstable you can just try manually clocking the speed (MHz) down one notch at a time until it's stable. I've had to do this before & it's a totally safe thing ...

Re: GeekosDaw broke my sound ?

Well that's good news :)

Yeh there's XMP (Extreme memory profile) which is what Intel calls it, then there's another name from AMD and maybe others. Whatever they're called, it's just a RAM profile at the end of the day. Anyway, you know about it now so it will be less confusing next time!

Re: GeekosDaw broke my sound ?

I'm glad you got the RAM working but I swear I told you multiple times that you needed to set the memory profile which will in turn set the the speed, timings & voltage for you. There was never a need to manually set all of those things..

Anyway, enjoy ;)
