Re: Decent but inexpensive powered near-fields

Hmmmm something to think over. I'm not sure I could get myself feeling right about a mono monitor. I *mostly* mix on headphones right now, but I feel like the mixes don't always translate well. I've been comparing current mixes to the stuff I did 8-10 years ago when I had a dedicated room and used m...

Good stuff! Love the guitar tone, and your playing is very expressive.

Re: Joyfulness - الفرح - Sevinçlilik

Really enjoyed this. I went through a phase of trying to understand Turkish music in the late '90s after my brother spent some time over there, but I never got my head around it. Love the way it sounds, though. I have a Saz collecting dust somewhere that I try to play now and then.

Re: Solid

I like the basic groove. The B section could be tightened up.

If I were mixing it, I'd probably bandpass filter the acoustic and pan it and trim some content from the B section.

Nice vibe overall. Dirty's not bad, It should be dirty.

The hunt of orion

I have some fun with VCVRack, the octatonic scale, and allegory.

Decent but inexpensive powered near-fields

My current monitor setup is very sub-optimal. I've got a big power-hungry 300w altec-lansing power amp running some big hifi speakers. My good studio monitors are in a closet somwhere because there's no room for them in my setup, but even these sub-optimal speakers are too big. They're awkwardly pla...

One-weekend recordings: Friday the 13th

I'm trying a new format with my "one weekend recordings" series. I talk through the process of recording a track, then play the track. This was called "Friday the 13th", and is a study in old-school studio techniques. Thought some of you might find this interesting. https://youtu...

Repairing an allied M3311 microphone (video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpGBAF8wzLo&t=304s Not really music, but I recorded the audio in Audacity and put the video together in kdenlive. :) This is a video I created about repairing an old microphone and testing it out. Looking for any feedback you might have, I'm trying some different ...

Using a low-Z unbalanced mic

I recently repaired an antique dynamic mic (Allied M3311) that was given to me by a family friend. It's unbalanced (2-conductor) and low-Z (10k ohm). If I plug it directly into an unbalanced input on my mixer, I have to crank the trim and the gain, and the hum is unreal. If I plug in to a directbox,...

Re: Hi from UK, LinuxMusician noob in some ways, not so in others!

It's a shame that, after 20 years of DAWs, we still don't have a common interchange format for session files. OMF looked promising for a while, but never caught on.

Re: condensor vs. dynamic (analysis+confusion)

First. I'm not discussing to pick a fight or whatever. I discus for a good discussion with argumented reasons were we can all (re) shape our oppionions and we all can become better. I have no problem at all with a good teaching discussion as long as it's not made personal and kept with the s...

Re: condensor vs. dynamic (analysis+confusion)

@lykwydchykyn My dynamics deliver good quality too, and they either give any problem. No one ever said my recordings are not clear enough. Some here heard some more parts of which vocals i've recorded so they can confirm that. No extra pro there for the common advice "condensor mic is the only...

Re: condensor vs. dynamic (analysis+confusion)

Getting a <$100 condenser mic is simply not going to be the best use of a limited budget unless you have a great sounding room and have the good luck to find not only a miraculous bargain but a good fit on the very first try! See maybe it's just me, but I really don't have a lot of trouble with my ...
