Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
My system is about 4 years old, but I won't get rid of it unless the mobo dies(already replaced power supply, north+south bridge coolers, and soon the graphics Card.) Asus 2.67 Intel i7(came overclocked at 2.93 but I honestly don't need the extra processing power and would rather give the processor ...

Re: Step by Step KXStudio upgrade Mint/Ubuntu/Debian/etc.
In an all inclusive easy for new users guide, it's better the leave terminal commands or manual file editing to a minimal. Secondly, if you're not using it, why not totally disable it? If you have multiple distros(or uprade with a new install every 2 years or so) it's one less step in the long run f...

Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
3.15 kernel can make a mess of a working 12.04 install. It should only be used with 14.04. 12.04 should either be 3.2 or 3.8 kernels.

Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
Like falk said, the only downfall to the method I posted is you would have to update the kernel yourself in the future if you wanted updates. If my Mint 17 with kxstudio and a particular daily build is working solid, I may never touch it, unless I specificly need something a newer kernel provides.

Re: Hi all and quick questions
Humm but since i never even worked with anything else other then Ubuntu im a bit scared lol. If i was to install Debian wich distro/version should i go for? You can use Ubuntu. The repos were switched to debian so they would work with both Debian and Ubuntu. I'm pretty sure most people here still u...

Re: Linux Mint 17 released
Been testing since the first day of RC and it seems wonderfully stable for me for audio work, though I'm hearing reports that mileage varies a great deal on 14.04!

Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
I didn't know a low-latency kernel was sill in the kx repos. Good to know! As for your troubles with 14.04 my setupd with a 1010 is actually running better(xrun wise) under 14.04 with the 3.15 low-latency kernel than my 12.04 with 3.8. I've got my buffer at 128, and everything so far is solid as a r...

Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
You can get the low-latency kernel: Stable: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.14-trusty/ or Nightly Builds(what I'm using): http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/ In either case download the linux-headers....all.deb, linux-headers..low-latency..amd64(or i386).deb, and li...

Re: Loading Windows VSTs within Carla
So, it's only your fault, not Cinnamon's. You should choose between RT and lowlatency branches since you're into music production. Generic kernel's usually work just fine for basic music work. They will produce more xruns if you drop your buffer lower than 1024, but the fact that they're not using ...

Re: Loading Windows VSTs within Carla
Like I said. Save very specific hardware situations, desktops as a whole are about equal. ANYTHING in your system has the potential to make audio bad. As for the RT kernel, it's not as essential for linux audio work as it once was. My findings are, the generic kernel is about all you need for 1024 b...

Just updated this kx upgrade guide today. Works with almost any debian,12.04, or 14.04 install.

Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
At the same time, I feel like the 3.15 recent low latency kernel works great on 14.04. If low-latency is your destination. I might go that way, and I'm starting to think 14.04. Benchmarking is about 50/50 and in the long run there will be more development and refinement of 14.04 from here on out.

MAJOR REVISION -Brought it into the 14.04 Era -Combined Steps down to 9 from 13 -Rewrote the guide to be more about generic Ubuntu bases than about Mint(Almost 2 years and 6800+ views of this thread and growing. I am betting only a small fraction are viewing for Mint.) -Fixed spelling mistakes -Adde...

Re: Reinstalling kx studio ububtu 12.04 or 14.04?
I've been testing Mint 17-RC(14.04), and on the surface it seems as stable as my 12.04 system, but haven't had time to test every single thing in my workflow. The question you have to ask yourself is, are there features in 14.04 that makes your life easier and better in your workflow? 12.04 is a pro...

Re: Loading Windows VSTs within Carla
I use gnome 3 based cairo-dock session. With a low-latency kernel there are no issues or xruns. My setup runs for months at a time without restart. As far as cinnamon in the original post, it may or may not be gnome 3 based. The original 1.0 was 100% based on Gnome 3. Now at 2.2 there's almost no gn...
