Re: Looking for Software

To play sampled instruments try linuxsampler which can play gigasampler, SFZ, and SF2 sample formats. So if you have a base in one of these formats you'd be in business. Scarbee once sold gigasampler stuff, but unfortunately (from the linux point of view) that all got converted to Native Instruments...

Re: AVLinux and Kernel 3.2

Concerning AVLinux, you can enable additional software repositories in synaptic and install newer versions of stuff. There is always the issue that you may break something in the process, but it may be an option if you need a newer version of Xorg for you video card.

Re: AVLinux and Kernel 3.2

I'd suggest posting AVLinux-specific questions to the AVLinux forum for best results. AVLinux does have some testing kernels up to 3.4 available - see http://www.remastersys.com/forums/index ... pic=1917.0. It would be helpful for you to try one of these out and report back to the AVLinux forum.

Re: Troubleshooting WINE (Melodyne specifically)

I know nothing about Melodyne, but it appears to be looking for a file C:/users/aaron/Temp/gnminidump.dmp. If you have Melodyne working on another platform you could look for a file of the same name and copy to the equivalent wine location which would likely be ~/.wine/drive_c/users/aaron/Temp/gnmin...

Re: Sample-accurate jack-midi softsynth or sampler

I have a naive question - what does it mean: "a sample accurate sampler"? Thanks.

Re: Hexter, and using the gazillions of sounds

In AVLinux which is based on Debian Squeeze, jack-dssi-host is in a separate package in synaptic. But different distros may package it differently.

Re: Question about CPU

I would clarify sending midi to a softsynth may use negligible CPU but the softsynth may use substantial CPU/DSP. Yoshimi can easily send DSP to 100% causing many xruns. When playing Yoshimi live (i.e. with low latency) I keep an eye on the DSP (shown in QJackCrl, for example) and lay off the keyboa...

Re: Newbie linuxsampler help

Qtractor uses Alsa midi which is why you had to create an Alsa midi connection with linuxsampler. If you run the program "a2jmidi" this will make a bridge between alsa and jack midi (you will see an "a2j" device in the QJackCtl Jack midi tab which lists all the connections in the...

Re: Hexter, and using the gazillions of sounds

Thanks also to Slowpick for the information how to add additional sounds to hexter. Yes, "jack-dssi-host /usr/lib/dssi/hexter.so" is a terminal command to create a standalone instance of hexter. It will create Jack midi an audio connections to the standalone instance. In general jack-dssi-...

Re: Newbie linuxsampler help

Here are some good references for linuxsampler: http://wootangent.net/2011/07/everything-you-always-wanted-to-know-about-linuxsampler/ https://github.com/ccherrett/oom/wiki/Linuxsampler To use the SFZ (and SF2) engines you have to compile the latest SVN of the linuxsampler code or use a distro which...

Re: crazy idea: Open-Source HD Orchesta Library

Here is another suggestion - the London Philharmonic Orchestral has made available a large number of samples here: http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/thesoundexchange/make_music/samples/library/ The samples cannot be made available as a sampler instrument, but one could make SFZ files using these samples...

Re: Help for absolute Linux-Audio-Beginner

I use AVLinux and am quite happy with it. It is a dedicated Audio-Video distribution and comes pre-loaded and configured with lots of AV software so you can be productive right away. But you list other good choices, too. Ardour, Qtractor, Mixbus (non-free), are good choices for audio recording. Many...

I do not think nondaw, nonsequencer have changed much since these posts, except for getting support for the new non session manager, which was introduced in Feb. 2012 see http://non.tuxfamily.org/

Just for your information http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/M-Audio_FastTrack_Pro does not work for me either in the US. I think alsa.opensrc.org is offline.
