Re: Newbie setting up a recording studio project

For network help, try - on another computer with working internet, perhaps - #ubuntu (be patient there) and #nm (=Network Manager; look for the dev, he's called 'dcbw') channels on irc.freenode.net. If you don't know how to use IRC, xchat is pre-installed on most Linux systems - I don't know about o...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

I want the co-op evaluators to be a small team of highly experienced musicians and/or sample-producers with experienced ears (I don't qualify, btw) and with experience in sampling. Should make the co-op more...agile...and effective...in decision-making...I hope. That sounds great. I would like that...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

What do you expect to make up the costs if you are sampling your own guitar? Your time? Or are you booking a studio slot? Yeah, I'm going for a studio. I have never needed to record audio so far. And I'm under the impression that no budget-built bedroom studio can stand up to a dedicated studio, an...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

Granted I didn't mean literally everyone can do it, but anyone who either has a decent home recording setup for recording music that he/she plays on acoustic instruments or anyone who has access to a recording studio can definitely do it, it's not something where you need $$$$$ of equipment. I don'...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

EDIT - It should also be possible for a 'sampling cooperative' to set down sample submission guidelines.[] I think an organization is the key to everything we're talking about here. A couple of guys might be able to get together and build an SFZ 2.0 sample player but a lot more needs to be done for...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

Oh dear. My previous post seems to have been taken wrongly, although to be fair I didn't word it quite well. By 'new format' what I really meant was 'new format/existing format chosen as a viable candidate to extend' and likewise for the engine. There really is no need for duplication of efforts if ...

Re: What laptop to buy

Shadow_7 - Oddly enough, my first notebook ever - a Toshiba Satellite C640 - has been going on close to two years now, and I use it extensively. No issues with the fan, had to change the battery though, and I think I'll have to do that every year - being a quad-core Core i5, it burns through the bat...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

Making a new sample format and aiming to take over the market is a long term thing. Ambitious, yes, good to do and have, yes. I have long wished all of Linux-audio would be this ambitious, taking the lead in innovation instead of following and always falling behind. I would, however, argue that this...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

I am using KxStudio. I suspect rakarrack has problems when installed on 64-bit machines. Ow. In which case...tough. :( And to touch on the topic a little...tux99, tnovelli - any 'status updates' on your respective ends? And is anyone else interested in lifting sampling on Linux audio out of the dum...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

I've built from source before but not so often that it's a trivial thing. Holy cow, was it ever "not trivial"; I had to learn how to patch source code! That was my first time for that. Actually, it's not that difficult but all the failed attempts to compile it and the searching for the pr...

Re: What laptop to buy

Wow. Has anyone here noticed that the last post here was in 2011, before shahzad10 bumped it? AnthonyCFox - Nice snag! ;) I'd recommend Intel graphics, as they maintain reliable opensrc drivers. Linux runs fine on my 3-year-old EeePC. NVidia and ATI have a checkered history of buggy and unsupp...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

I'm a bit of a tone snob and Amplitube 3 is gorgeous. That it runs in Wine makes Linux a viable option for my home studio. Until I discovered it I was planning on getting Eleven Rack and going with ProTools. Guitarix is good, like a Peavey Rage. Amplitube 3 is like living in a Guitar Center; it mak...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

What about SF2 and GIG? I can't find the specs of those. Any other useful formats? Maybe the Gravis PAT format? Personally I'm also interested in converting to SDS (MIDI sample dump standard) but I have the spec for that already. I doubt if anyone wants anything to do with SF2 and GIG anymore. This...

Re: The state of sample players on Linux

Oh, right, sample converters, I forgot to respond about those. The ones you listed (and basically all the ones that exist) probably don't handle the scripting part of Kontakt, which'd reduce the benefits of conversion. And apparently Chicken Systems Translator Pro is said to be so buggy that it's ha...
