Re: M-Audio MidiSport 2x2 Problem

http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/ There's different chipsets and stuff inside, even though those many variants have the same outsides. So you might have to do some trickery, or it might work out of the box. The device page on the m-audio site shows OS X support, so it should work in linux. I have ...

Re: Doing a workshop for kids on making music using FLOSS

That sounds like a neat project. Just thinking to myself, that maybe it could be like a $60 per participant workshop. That does all that on a raspberry pi and at the end of it, they get to keep the pi. There's more spec-y devices out now than pi. But I'd jump on something like that just because I ge...

Re: Fender Mustang amp barely audible when recording[solved]

I really don't know, but I'd guess mic level vs. line level. In case you have to run it through a board that only has mic preamps. And there's a voltage difference between mic and line inputs. I guess it depends on what connectors are in use and all that. And I'm basically guessing as to why.

Re: Fender Mustang amp barely audible when recording

Has it worked the way you want before and nothing is different hardware wise? If you're using fluidsynth / qsynth as the input sound, there's a gain option there. The default gain on fluidsynth is barely audible in some distros. And make sure the volume from the keyboard is appropriate, changing my ...

Re: Separate host for Midi keyboard

Alsa is the driver for the soundcard. Jack is a layer on top of that. You can use both at the same time, from a technical standpoint, as long as nothing locks the device. Not much of an issue with current versions of stuff. You can even have the pulseaudio layer over jack over alsa. And various comp...

Re: Please, stop the FLOSS donation guilt trips and begging!

I don't have any issues donating to things that can make me money, if I have the money. Like microsoft office back in the day so my resume was compatible with what those who hire would want and expect. Truth be told, FOSS doesn't always produce the results that others want and expect. Even though th...

Re: Howto set up Presonus Audiobox 1818vsl?

The device has a name of hw:2 in alsa terms. With ardour, you would launch jackd for hw:2 and connect ardour to jack. You can assign a name other than hw:2 with a ~/.asoundrc file. You can also reindex the cards so hw:2 is hw:0 which is the default, and everything will just lean to using it by defau...

Re: M-Audio M-Track Quad vs. Focusrite Scarlett 18i8

The focusrite looks like the better piece of hardware. The M-Audio one doesn't seem to publish noise specs and has a FAQ that seems to suggest quirks.

Re: cwm - Anyone else like this option for a window manager?

From a fresh debian 7.2.0 (wheezy) install I had to apt-get the following to compile cwm. Dependencies were grabbed and not listed here of course. Just an extract from the bash_history of root after installation. Not all of the packages listed were required for the compile. I tend to do the debootst...

Re: An old server as a studio machine... Good idea or bad?

It looks plenty powerful. I'd worry about the state of the cooling system. There's plenty of CPU and RAM to smoke most peoples new toys. But it might suck a bit of juice. And I wouldn't want to sleep in the same room as it.

Re: cwm - Anyone else like this option for a window manager?

If you try it and don't like it.

Cntrl + Alt + Shift + Q == get out of the X environment

Otherwise the usual Cntrl + Alt +F# works for another console to purge it old school.

cwm - Anyone else like this option for a window manager?

http://martintoft.dk/?p=cwm I was watching a BSD podcast and an author of several technical books was quite avid about using cwm, the calm window manager. So I set out to see what it was all about. The above link is for a linux variant, not available in repositories, but compiles happily on my wheez...
