Re: What is Man

It boggles my mind that a single human can put all this music together in their head and then make it so. Wow. I don't know my prog very well, but I definitely heard some echoes of Tull in here (sans flute), especially in the vocals. I especially liked the melodic bit that emerges around 7:45 (and t...

Re: Batch of new songs, Sugar Gas

Just back at a proper keyboard after a break. Thanks for the comments. YEAH!!! NAILED IT!!! [milo does a happy dance] If your album is anything to go by, I suspect we have quite a bit of overlap in our music collections! :D After listening a few times I'm still trying to decide if my favorite track ...

Good news for Fedora users?

Considering he managed to bring Ubuntu Studio back from the brink, this should make Fedora folks happy: Ubuntu Studio is doing very well. I have a team that I rely on to keep things running. I decided to look at Fedora to see how they were doing, only to find out Fedora Jam had not been released for...

Re: Still waffling over nearfields

I've got some 3" Mackie CR series monitors, which are a good budget option. Not too big, not too loud, but loud and clear enough to get a good amateur mix. ( https://mackie.com/products/cr-multimedia-monitors ) Milo is spot on about the Mackies! I used these for a couple years as well and they...

Re: Still waffling over nearfields

I've listened to your mixes in the past and as I recall they sound quite good and that you have a real knack for arranging (which IMHO is 80% of mixing anyway). Sounds like you are hemmed in with real-world restraints. Since you are already adept at headphone-to-car adjustments, maybe consider a sin...

Re: Bass plugins + Guitar to Bass flow

Bass player here. Absolutely go for the octaver approach for fun and experimentation, but also consider just using a synth or sampler for your bass sounds if you don't have access to a bass. You can definitely fill low end space with the guitar + octaver approach, but it's unlikely to sound very con...

Re: Deep editing Ardour regions

I may not be understanding correctly, but you should be able to simply zoom to the sample level in any region. I just select the click with the range tool and hit delete, then combine the regions. At that level the edit is inaudible.

Re: Salsa sketch in 7/8

Thanks for sharing this. That's a mighty adventurous sketch. The guitar sounds Santana-ly massive even on my terrible tower speaker.

Welcome back.

Re: Come Walk With Me

I'm curious what you mean by "direct approach". My guess is that you are referring to how the lyrics aren't really shrouded in mystery, even though they are symbolic it isn't too hard to understand what they mean? By direct approach I didn't mean anything about the lyrics specifically, ju...

Re: Come Walk With Me

This was an absolutely delightful song! Thanks for sharing it. It's always refreshing hearing music with such a good vibe and direct approach. Technical comments didn't even come to mind because I was too busy enjoying it. :D The first part of the opening clarinet phrase seems like a sly nod to the ...

Re: Batch of new songs, Sugar Gas

Thanks gang for the comments, really appreciated. I think you nailed the genre you were aiming at. Your voice is quite distinctive. It kept reminding me of Elvis Costello for some reason, although more gravely. Thanks milo. I think I've listened to all the EC with the Attractions records1000 times e...

Re: Batch of new songs, Sugar Gas

Thanks Glen! You're hired! ;) I can't really listen to my own voice without cringing but until we can feed lyrics into a VST it is what it is. I forgot to add that the AVL drumkits (through Hydrogen) are on more than half the songs. I'm going to try to use the plugin versions on the next batch. It s...

Batch of new songs, Sugar Gas

I have a new album of songs up. I'm calling it Sugar Gas because almost every tune was an attempt to emulate the vibe of some of my favorite pop music of the 70s/80s/90s. Most of them took a left turn from there, but that was the original idea. 80% made with Mixbus, Guitarix, Hydrogen, Pianoteq and...
