Some time a while ago it did actually work but it was sporadic when it did, now it just does not work.

Also to jack playback works fine. but not jack capture to alsa. All i need to do is get audio coming from a usb interface into an alsa program. Simples.

The key is is you went from an Nvidia card to an ATI card. X is configured to use the nvidia driver (wether it be noveou or propriety) so that is why you get no GUI.

You will need to remove the nvidia driver and then install the ati radeon drivers.
