Re: What videogame are you playing?
...keyboard only, I'm forever stuck at rookie level... You must have a reason for crippling yourself with kb only? I was kb only on Descent and was never able to make the jump from Hotshot to Ace, but once I went kb+mouse I was able to do Insane runs comfortably. HOWEVER, D2 I was only able to comf...

Re: What videogame are you playing?
After Overload: First Strike... Hey are you talking about Overload the Descent remake? That thing is awesome. Descent is one of my top games, and even though I never played multi-player I got good enough in SP to do Insane/cold-start/no-deaths/full-rescue/all-kills on every level. As far as native ...

...programs that are equally adept at handling both audio and video. Sony Vegas "Originally developed as audio editing software, it became an NLE for video and audio, starting from version 2.0." Many, many years ago I did all my audio and video work in Vega 4 and I was never left wanting ...

Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them
Then again, what would I have left to complain about if it all "just worked". It's basically there now. When I started using Linux 13 years ago I cursed the sky at how hard it was to do audio. This year I have a System76 desktop with the newest version of Pop_OS! which comes with Pipewire...

Re: Reaper and Calf Fluidsynth
I was just dealing with this problem the other day before switching to Fluida.lv2. In the past I got Calf plugins to work with a GUI in REAPER by loading them inside Carla VST. It would sometimes crash though. Also, I never used Calf Fluidsynth with the method since Carla supports soundfonts. Howeve...

Re: What makes Jazz, jazz
Do you not think the sixties produced some of the most accessible jazz? The sixties is when bossa nova, as discussed above, came into jazz. Right. I'm a big fan of Bossa Nova and I've always understood it as a distinct genre separate from Jazz. So the real question maybe we should ask is do people ...

Re: What makes Jazz, jazz
the definition of Jazz changed from the 20's through the 60's Well, aspects of jazz changed during that time. The general definition I gave tries to summarize the most common and important aspects of jazz. But there's always an edge case that doesn't fit the definition very closely. You're right, I...

Re: What makes Jazz, jazz
jazz standards... are *much* more complicated than... modern "pop" music forms I was talking about the historical origin of jazz; how it came to be regarded as a new genre. (What jazz did so differently from other music at time, such that it was no longer viewed, nor described, the same.)...

Re: What makes Jazz, jazz
I think j_e_f_f_g has the closest definition of Jazz in this thread. It's hard to talk about the properties of a music genre without historical context. From what I remember in my music history classes (and without looking anything up), Jazz followed the following trajectory: Musicians raised on the...

Re: Improve tone on direct-in guitar?
Sounds quite fine to me ... Agreed, this is a clean signal that is ripe for processing and tone sculpting with plugins. Direct-in electric guitars are not supposed to sound good. Heh, I disagree there. I have a strange aversion to distorted guitar now that I'm old and have a lot of hearing loss. Pr...

Re: Folder organization ideas?
On my Data partition I have the following folder and sub-folders (approximately): Audio |-Captures |-Drums |-Kits |-Sounds |-MIDI |-Plugins |-LV2 |-VST |-Samples |-SoudFonts |-GM |-Other This is my library where I keep anything that is not a current project. All my current projects go on the Desktop...

Re: Bandshed Records - "The (not) Willie Mack album"
I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying this, this style of blues doesn't usually hold my interest. Makes me want to break out some SRV. Really wild take on Grandma's Hands, I have a special attachment to the original. The organ is incredible. Thanks for making this album.

Re: Kids nowadays.....
Few people have any idea of how much time and effort went into NBO. Holy Christmas, I had no idea. I knew making soundfonts was not easy since I tried making a few in the 90s, but damn. I now feel guilty for selling a 250+ sound sample pack I made that, while still a lot of work, was nothing compar...
