Re: Assembling a dedicated computer to produce goood music

Intel CPU (3+ ghz) with integrated graphics. No need for anything more unless your audio workstation will double as a gaming rig. I avoid AMD/ATI because I've always had more problems with them, all around. Someone suggested fanless... I wouldn't bother. Audio requires fast CPUs and that means fans....

Re: jack server cannot be started for external USB sound card

You could also try to start jack with Cadence instead of Qjackctl. It might tell you what's wrong.

Re: jack server cannot be started for external USB sound card

Might be a DBUS issue. Does it work if you turn off the dbus options in Qjackctl advanced tab? To rule out conflicts, make sure pulseaudio and jack aren't running: ps ax | grep -E 'pulse|jack' You might have to "kill -9" them. Then check again to make sure something isn't auto-restarting t...

Re: project open for collaboration

if you want something to relate that to, have a look at the ardour 5.10 release notes: https://community.ardour.org/node/15114 I'll try it out anyway, but I shall give more energy to alternatives like qtractor. Yeah... I just experienced a bug in 5.9 that was supposedly fixed in 5.5 and again in 5....

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?

Groovy.

You could bring out the percussion a lot more (except hihat), lower the bass synth during guitar solos, do at least one rep without bass, add a piano solo/break. Maybe switch to a different riff / chord progression sometimes, or just do some variations on this one.

Re: I'm here. And you?

I'm here. I have a nice cool basement studio and a little free time this summer. * I mainly play electric guitar and fiddle, and a few other instruments with questionable skill * can read music, play by ear, or improvise Nope, I don't pay much attention to Original Recordings either; it's a busy for...

Re: Subgroup: Virtual Music Projects

I don't get the P2P yet. Is that to jam together? haha, nope. P2P meaning no central servers, no big internet company to screw it up for profit. The networking equivalent of open-source. There IS a program for jamming over the internet, but latency would be >50ms for most people, so that's hopeless...

Re: Subgroup: Virtual Music Projects

riot.im looks like the right idea, a complete P2P communication & collaboration system. I won't get my hopes up though. It's built on top of some new framework for such things called Matrix (seriously ) and it's all built on Javascript etc, convenient but not so great. I'll probably just wa...

Re: Which plugin formats are standard in linux today?

Interesting, thanks all. PUGL does look good. Just looking at the code; haven't tried it yet. You can use it with either Xlib, OpenGL, Xlib+Cairo, or OpenGL+Cairo. Cairo is a bit bloaty but it should look great with relatively little work. If you use OpenGL+Cairo, it renders the cairo canvas to a te...

Re: JACK claimed to give

Try Cadence, it'll check all your settings. You can just logout and login after adding the audio group. You basically only need to reboot after installing a kernel. QJackCtl "Realtime permissions" just adds a -R or -P flag to the jackd command line. This has no effect unless you're in the ...

Re: Difference between jackd and jackdbus

I have jackd2 installed and when I start JACK via QJackCtl, I see only jackdbus process. There is no jackd now. Ok. Go to QJackCtl > Setup > Misc tab. Uncheck "JACK DBUS Interface". Click Ok and start Jack. It should start "jackd" now. You might still see a "jackdbus" ...

Re: Difference between jackd and jackdbus

heh, thanks @falkTX, this is even more confusing than I thought. The jackd2 package (in Ubuntu) contains two jack servers, called jackd and jackdbus. jackd is apparently for backward compatibility. jackdbus is controllable via dbus (using jack_control, Cadence, QJackCtl, etc) jackdbus is a jack serv...
