Re: Admin Change for LinuxMusicians
Late to the party as usual. It's odd how a family and kids do that to you. Many thanks Nate for your hard work with this site and your other Linux-related endeavors (I was also a fan of your Productive Linux podcast).

Re: Best sound card to buy?
Whatever card you choose, you'll want to make sure it is supported under ALSA (the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture). There's a list on their wiki (although it needs to be updated) of cards known to work well with Linux. It's at http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Alsa_Preferred_Soundcards . If you h...

Re: Unable to start aqualung in real time
Good to see some Aqualung love. It's easily the best music player for Linux (especially with the dark theme installed)!

Re: Dave Phillips' writings and tutorials (very informative!)
This is a much belated reply, but I just stumbled across this post and couldn't help myself. Informative is an epic understatement! I imagine that hundreds, if not thousands of audio enthusiasts first got into Linux because of Dave's fine work. I know this to have been the case with me. Quite nearly...

Re: Fastest File system
And from the wiki... For audio use, it is desirable to use a filesystem that favours few big files over many small files and low-latency over long-term thoughput. It is said that ReiserFS and fuseblk are bad choices from this perspective, while ext3 is good. ext4 is not recommended with kernels >= 2...

Thanks for the links. Looks like I'll have to start saving my pennies. It's probably well worth the $99.

Re: Yoshimi eats CPU
Sounds like you've hit upon a denormal. Install JACK bitmeter (I believe that UbuStu has this installed by default for some odd reason) connect Yoshimi to it and see if it lights up like a Christmas tree. The following link explains the usage and interpretation of the bitmeter. http://devel.tlrmx.or...

Re: "Studio" vs. Normal Distributions
Congrats on finding a distro that works for you. I've heard great things about AV Linux, but haven't tried it yet myself. I think Louigi and Jan have already answered your questions, but I thought I'd chime in since a lot of them are still fresh in my mind (I'm still something of a newb). One of the...

Re: Collaborative Writing Setup
Reaper might be something to consider. It's a proprietary Windows' app, but lots of Linux audio folks have had great luck running it in Wine (it currently has a gold rating on the WineHQ website). I'm hesitant to recommend that you install non-free software on your Linux box, but I have to admit tha...

Re: Headroom
As far as mastering goes (and this is way out of my area of expertise), JAMin http://jamin.sourceforge.net/en/about.html is supposed to to be the way to go in Linux. It's pretty CPU intensive (it always ties up my crap PIII-s box), but it looks incredibly promising. Maybe you'll have better luck tha...
