Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

@matyas That's just a case of old documentation still floating around. Install QPWGraph instead of Qjackctl. Problem solved. Ardour works great with PW-Jack. qpwgraph doesn't handle all the usecases that qjackctl does: it only provides the patchbay bits. I don't think there is a widely-accepted PW ...

Re: Configuring QJACKCTL and/or alternatives that don't break everything

Install qpwgraph (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/rncbc/qpwgraph.) It's a patchbay for Pipewire. Set your device to "Pro Audio" in the Ubuntu sound settings. Ardour works great with Pipewire, it just thinks it's talking to Jack.

linux audio is currently even more obscure than before, imo.

Case in point:

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

Do you worry about the software stack of your wifi adapter? ...beside the fact that you never would do audio via wlan (what you didn't state, i know it was an example for hiding complexity), when you need reliability: if you are on the road with AES67 or Dante, you're in the game with your stack, e...

Yamaha Studio Manager

Probably kind of a long shot, but has anyone successfully gotten the Yamaha Studio Manager app (used for configuring Yamaha digital consoles) running under Wine?

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

If you succeed in that the next launch of Ardour is still going to yell at you because your User doesn't have security limits permissions and as a new User you're going to have to figure out what that means, what 'groups' are and how to add yourself to a 'pipewire' group that Ardour's cryptic warni...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

Audio is not simple. So I expect, indeed, need, some complexity in fully industry standard configurations, in whatever linux tools are at hand. I'm fine with complex synths, effects, amps, racks, daws, and learning their working settings. But I've been to Missouri. "Show me" clear pipewir...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

Let's say your Distro comes with PipeWire in a good solid recent version, you are new to Linux and you want to try Ardour but your stems to import are all at 44.1Khz.. PipeWire's default is 48000Khz and Ardour is either going to blunt force convert the sample rate on import or it's going to accommo...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

I sure hope that 'no performance hit' is not the goal. That's just spinning the wheels. You mention 'when properly set up', which implies user configuration duties, as so many diverse systems exist. We already have that feature, too. No, superior performance is the goal. Equivalent pe...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

If you sit someone down who has never used Linux for audio before, they will have an easier time with Pipewire as it cuts a lot of the crap out... As long as pipewire comes with jack and pulse "emulations" to get audio applications to work, one kind of crap seems to be replaced by another...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

If your current system is working for you, cool. No need to switch. But eventually, you're probably going to want to upgrade, and the major distros are mostly adopting Pipewire. I came to Pipewire reluctantly. Ubuntu adopted it, and therefore I had it. I figured I would uninstall it and go back to A...

Re: Studio One - Linux version

I still haven't tried this, mostly because I have an Nvidia card that Wayland refuses to recognize. But I can think of one big use case for this none of the other Linux DAWs currently have on offer: spatial audio. StudioLive supports Dolby Atmos. As far as I know, the only other Linux application to...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...

Running Pipewire 0.3.83 here and with the Pro profile I now have the same latency as I had with Jack (using a Scarlett 6i6) combined with the flexibility and features of Pipewire. Well done @wtay and team. Yes, the "debate" is essentially closed. Even before this latest release, I was see...

Re: Max may be coming to Linux!

I agree with the above posters. If you don't want to use proprietary software, you don't have to do so. I fully respect that some people are fully committed to using only open-source tools. I myself tend to prefer open-source applications when I have an option, which is why use SuperCollider, MuseSc...

Max may be coming to Linux!

Cycling74 is apparently “actively exploring” a native port of Max/MSP to Linux:

Still very much up in the air, but exciting nonetheless!
