Re: NixOS and music: Experiences?
Mysteriously (to me), even though `apt-get -s install jackd1 jackd2` suggests I've got both versions half-installed, `apt-cache policy` does not: jeff@jeff-Inspiron-5567:~$ apt-cache policy jackd1 jackd1: Installed: (none) Candidate: 2:0.124.2~20151211-2~kxstudio1v5 Version table: 2:0.124.2~20151211...

Re: NixOS and music: Experiences?
> You are kidding, right? No, that would be a poor use of a forum like this. I never installed Jack 1 *or* Jack 2. Whatever I've got is what KXStudio installed for me, or whatever other things (Bitwig?) might have installed for themselves. Had I been choosing ahead of time, obviously I would have ch...

Re: NixOS and music: Experiences?
I'm going to try running NixOS on a live disk and use a giant (128 Gb) USB stick as a hard drive, and see what I can get working. > Why NixOS? Its package manager is "purely functional", declarative. Rather than maintaining a mutable store of installed apps the way most things do -- which ...

NixOS and music: Experiences?
I'm tired of dependency hell doing music on Ubuntu. I've read a lot about NixOS and it sounds wonderful, but I don't know how much support for audio applications it provides. Has anybody here used it?

Re: Can't start Cadence; "No Reply" error -- but maybe Cadence is already running?
KXStudio has been working well for me for nigh on a year. I'm afraid I don't remember what I did to install it. I've been using Claudia perpetually, for everything (web browsers, mp3 players, etc.), with the PulseAudio and Alsa bridges both enabled almost always. I've been using alsamixer almost per...

Ubuntu 18.04. All my sound stuff came from KXStudio, via apt. The computer's a Dell Inspiron laptop.

Can't start Cadence; "No Reply" error -- but maybe Cadence is already running?
I can only start Cadence from the command line with sudo . If I do that it looks different, though -- as if it's using Qt instead of Gtk, or vice versa. That sudo version of Cadence shows "User in audio group: No", and when I click "start" it says "unable to start, check the...

Re: Copying to lv2/ folder insufficient to install plugin?
Solved! All I had to do was delete spaces and parens from all filenames (including the parent folder) and from a few places where they appeared inside the .ttl files. Here are the sed commands I used for the latter: sed -i "s/Pianoteq 4 (5 channels)/Pianoteq_4_with_5_channels/g" *.ttl sed ...

Re: Copying to lv2/ folder insufficient to install plugin?
The plot thickens! You can use lv2ls to check if the plugins are installed. When I call `lv2ls | grep -i pianoteq` I get this: error: /usr/lib/lv2/Pianoteq-4.lv2/manifest.ttl:29:29: invalid IRI character ` ' (escape %20) lilv_world_load_file(): error: Error loading file `file:///usr/lib/lv2/Pianoteq...

Copying to lv2/ folder insufficient to install plugin?
I am trying to use the Pianoteq plugin, which generates audio from MIDI. Long ago I apt-installed most, maybe all, of kxstudio. I downloaded the source, which gave me (in relevant part) the following two files and one folder: -rwxr-xr-x 1 jeff jeff 25464328 abr 22 2014 'Pianoteq 4' drwxr-xr-x 2 jeff...

Dance between alsamixer and 1/8" cable needed in order to use laptop speaker port
The problem I can only use the laptop's speaker out port if I do the following: - In alsamixer, enable auto-mute. - Put the plug in halfway. - Disable auto-mute. - Push the plug in the rest of the way. If I close and restart audacity, I have to go through the dance again. Some context KDE, Ubuntu 1...

Claudia cannot locate a saved studio, maybe because of the ghost character "%26"
I cannot load a previously saved studio in Claudia. I can save them fine, and find them in the file browser, and they look like ordinary xml. I can see them under "Load Studio" in Claudia. But when I try to load one, I get an error like this: run: failed to stat '/home/jeff/.ladish/studios...

Re: JACK (permissions?) problem, "Connection refused"; only SuperCollider can make sound
How do you check what the default audio device refers to? More generally, how do you investigate what's going on? I feel guilty whenever I have an audio problem because while I know how to experiment, I don't know how to investigate. I just try stuff at random and record what I've done and try to co...

JACK (permissions?) problem, "Connection refused"; only SuperCollider can make sound
Everything was working until my computer crashed Monday. Now only SuperCollider can make sound. I'm using KXStudio. Cadence starts automatically at login. It used to start JACK automatically, but now it doesn't. I can start JACK (according to Cadence) either from Cadence itself, or by booting the se...
