Re: Neil modular tracker

I second that emotion, unaudio. It's the only Buzz clone that has ever worked for me. Abandon all others and head to Planet Neil!

Actually calling it a Buzz clone really doesn't do it justice. Am I overselling this, or what? Don't care, it's good!

Re: sunvox tracker!!!!

You seriously have to check out some more of this guy's stuff! His name is Alex Zolotoff, and i've been following his development for about three years. His "Virtual ANS" is a graphics-to-sound app that mimics the ideas of Skryabin (a late 19th, early 20th cent. composer and synasthete, wh...

Re: who are the giants....?

Thanks for those suggestions, and i'll be adding work of this calibre to my list. (I've got to admit i have a great liking for Bogdan Raczinski. there's a lot of humour in his work. but i'm not here to give opinions. binarpilot does really good stuff too.) so who is musically at the "bleeding e...

Re: Polished and powerful MIDI / VST / Audio DAW?

hi, can i just suggest a look at two "environments" for VST/DSSI that i have found useful. "jost" http://www.anticore.org/jucetice/?page_id=4 is very good (but only hosts VSTs that have been ported to its native format). it can be controlled by a sequencer that you feel comfortab...

Re: who are the giants....?

...the motherload! i notice you saved the best until last. i had honestly never heard of the Shepard scale or the Shepard-Risset tone. and i'm absolutely fascinated with Rissets continually accelerating rhythm. You're spot on, this is the stuff i'm looking for, but i'm greedy! i want MORE..... PS i ...

Re: who are the giants....?

likewise, i'd be grateful for the code of the OHM cd. please post. the reason i started this thread was that i REALLY want to find out who is seriously using computers to originate music rather than rehash old work. and anyway, i prefer the name "art" music. not all composition is "se...

Re: Music sheets and sheets and more sheets

so far i can tell you that for the classical musician, IMSLP is brilliant, but there are only scanned versions, so beware of the bad scanners. great for raw information though - i've wanted a replacement solo 'cello part for the Dvorak concerto since mine was lost in the 1980s - and it's there! grea...

Re: who are the giants....?

yes, i'd add Nancarrow to the list, but then i'd also add whoever invented the fairground organ. have you ever seen the guts of one of those babies? they're powered by elastic bands and toilet rolls, but they are the mothers of the revolution! i think that i'd also include any of the "musique c...

who are the giants....?

Newton said "..if we have seen a little further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants..." so who are the "giants of computer music? is the likes of Busoni and Percy Grainger? or maybe Moog? or is the small unsung army of programmers who daily delight us with new linux stuff? i...

i love this, and immediately wanted to dive in with both feet (and hands) but £4K would mean i would have to turn BOTH my pockets inside out...and that's just not a good look for me. i know, i'll build my own! now where's that old bassoon, where did i put gaffer tape...soundcard...cuddly toy...ooh, ...

Re: How many Linux musicians are JUST guitarist??

the reason i got into computers was that i wanted to learn another instrument...in this case, the computer itself! i wanted to make the noises i heard in my head into a reality i couldn't achieve with any other instrument. it takes just as long to master this new instrument as any other - possibly l...

Re: Idea: Mixing with linux or ardour musicians

Nice idea! i first saw it done at a Trade Fair (remember those?) where they had a desk set up with all the tracks from Peter Gabriels "Sledgehammer". and you could book a time, sit down, and remix it! Awesome! mine turned out shit! this is totally in the spirit of open source, and i'll gla...

Re: Synchronising live music file (mp3) to an instrument score

syncing it up it is a NIGHTMARE, but here's how. load the MIDI file into rosegarden and mute all the tracks that come up. load the mp3 file into an audio track and zoom into the wave view so that you can see exactly where the track starts. move the start of the audio to the start of the MIDI. Now zo...

Re: how do you compose your songs?

Edward Elgar said "Music is in the air - you just reach out and take as much of it as you want." i would urge you to train your "mind's ear" so that you can speak the language (whatever language your music is in!). listen faithfully to your own imagination. train your memory so t...

Re: 'Karma (music theory) Police'...

what do i think is good?

any music that keeps its own integrity...by which i mean that it must set its own rules from the outset and remain self-contained for its duration. But isn't that the basis for any art?
