Did the Alesis io2 work for you in jack? Mine only shows up as midi. It does - shows up under the ALSA tab and I can hear audio from my bass guitar in my monitor speakers or headphones as soon as everything is connected, even without starting qjackctl. When I do start it this is what I see: io2(1)....

I used to use a Behringer UCG102 guitar link, and I remember all sorts of frustration before I got it to work. However, it definitely, absolutely can work (though the bizarre thing was I only used to be able to hear any input if I also had Rakkarack running!) I moved onto using an Alesis io2 express...

Sorry, I should have been clearer - the Mac is in the home studio that our guitarist made for himself, I'm living in a resolutely Linux household :)

I'll have a look at AV Linux, though Ubuntu Studio has been a pretty stable base so far. Thanks for your suggestion.
