Re: Do you want more people to use Linux for music?
certainly not by shaming, insulting, or hard-selling people who aren't using Linux That indeed would make no sense - though I'm not sure that happens a lot? It happens among younger people, though more subtly among the older ones. I see it on reddit a lot, where people divide others up into "l...

Re: Do you want more people to use Linux for music?
When I started out using Linux, I was big into pushing it because Linux needed more users. I wanted people to use it so that it would benefit Linux and help it to grow and be better, more legit. At some point, I became convinced that my advocacy was backwards. It's not that Linux needs the people; t...

Re: What kind of musician am I?
You sound like my kind of musician. I have a lot of "ooh shiny" issues with my creative activities. One day I want to record a prog rock masterpiece, the next day I want to build my own guitar pedals, the next I want to make a synth-pop song with nothing but one synth and a tape machine. A...

Re: is Hydrogen better than Ardour for drums
When I've used Hydrogen, I generally set it to output separate tracks for each instrument, then record hydrogen's output directly into Ardour. That way I can take advantage of subtle variations introduced by Hydrogen's humanize and probability features. I like to get things into the audio domain as ...

Re: Um, help?"
You might want to look at LMMS. It's different from tracker-style programs, but it's a pretty easy environment for creating electronic music. I don't think you can record vocals in it; for that, you'd want to bring your tracks into something like Ardour or QTractor (the latter being the gentler lear...

Re: Latest recordings -- what can i improve
I like these tracks. I've been thinking for a while that Tocatta and Fugue in D minor would make a great surf rock song, so it's nice to hear another rock arrangement of a classical piece. I dig the recorder solo on the last piece. The last verse in that third song is particularly poignant -- very ...

Re: Latest recordings -- what can i improve
The first one: what a great voice and song! I have a bit of a pet peeve with the "gaspings" at the beginning of the phrasings, they take me a bit out of the song, and I usually lower them down or even remove them in my own stuff, but I've observed that a lot of people just leave them as t...

Re: Latest recordings -- what can i improve
The first track is quite good. I'd say that for the first verse there could be just a bit of 'something else' to package together everything else. Subsequent verses are all right. Of course, everything should be well mixed and mastered. I would agree that the bass needs a bit more punch. It sounds ...

Re: Latest recordings -- what can i improve
I think the first one sounds great, I didn't hear anything worth nitpicking. Did you really do the percussion track(s) with only a cajon and a hihat? Yeah, though I also have a talking drum, a darbuka, and some other little hand-held percussion things I layer in. No samples or or anything like that...

Re: Latest recordings -- what can i improve
Thanks for the feedback. The bass is pretty heavily compressed already, though I didn't want to totally lose dynamics. I think the cymbals (which is really just my hihat with the two plates separated) were distorting. I was tracking another song last night and found that activating the pad on the in...

Latest recordings -- what can i improve
Here are a few of my latest songs I've done with ardour. I've been focusing more on capturing good sounds from real instruments and less on post-processing or emulating. http://www.alandmoore.com/lc/aud/Alan%20D%20Moore%20-%20Come%20out%20of%20Babylon.ogg http://www.alandmoore.com/lc/aud/Alan%20D%20...

Re: The hunt of orion
Thanks for correcting the link, sorry about that! There's definitely a learning curve to modular synths, and I would probably not be so excited if I hadn't taken that college course that included modular synths. I think the key to appreciating them is understanding what they really excel at. Express...

Re: Decent but inexpensive powered near-fields
Hmmmm something to think over. I'm not sure I could get myself feeling right about a mono monitor. I *mostly* mix on headphones right now, but I feel like the mixes don't always translate well. I've been comparing current mixes to the stuff I did 8-10 years ago when I had a dedicated room and used m...
