Lately I've been using Ardour to record/compose, then exporting to MIDI via https://github.com/dbolton/ArdourMIDIExport and open up in MuseScore. The notation for complicated piano parts take work to fix, but the single-line instruments (after quanizing in Ardour) come through pretty well.

As far as I can tell, LinuxSampler used to be in the kxstudio repositories, but isn't anymore? For the current list of applications see http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Reposit ... plications

(I think this has been true for Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 13.10)
