Hello,
I'm trying to setup a DAW with linux, and being an Ubuntu user, I'm interested in Ubuntu Studio. I was going to ask why the default is now the generic kernel, and not the RT kernel. I've also noticed 3 kernels now available, a "low latency" kernel is also available, which I assume is not real time. Does anybody here use Ubuntu Studio 10.04? Can you give an opinion on which kernel best suits a DAW? I'm assuming the generic kernel has a higher latency, and is not a good choice. Why has Ubuntu Studio 10.04 gone with a high latency kernel? Am I better off with another distro?

Re: Realtime Kernel / Ubuntu Studio 10.04
Hi discord,
Not sure why the default kernel for Studio is a generic one. It probably has got something to do with the fact that there is no 2.6.32 realtime kernel because the developer (who is in no way related to Ubuntu) who works on maintaining the RT patches decided to skip the 2.6.32 branch and jumped directly to the 2.6.33 branch.
Fortunately the Ubuntu packagers decided to include a 2.6.31 branch realtime kernel and a 2.6.32 lowlatency/preempt kernel for the less demanding users. The lowlatency kernel is a tweaked kernel, but without the actual RT patchset.
Personally I think it's best to go for the 2.6.31-10-rt kernel for your DAW if you decide to stick with Ubuntu. I'm an Ubuntu user myself also, works very well for me and with PPA's like the ones from philip5, falkTX and AutoStatic you'll also have access to the latest and greatest of most audio apps.
Best,
Jeremy

Re: Realtime Kernel / Ubuntu Studio 10.04
Thanks for the info, looking forward to setting up my DAW. Can you tell me if I should just install Ubuntu Studio fresh, or if an upgrade from Vanilla doesn't cause too many headaches?

Hello discord, I'd suggest to install the packages you need with Synaptic on top of your vanilla install. OS-wise, Ubuntu Studio is nothing more than a vanilla Ubuntu with a lot of extra packages installed and a custom theme. You can also do it yourself, that's what I prefer, because I don't feel like uninstalling 80% of the packages again after installing/upgrading to Ubuntu Studio.

thanks again, the upgrade was a no brainer, looking forward to configuring jack for my soundcard!
