Hi,

I'm only days old in terms of Linux, but learning fast on the steep curve after migrating from windows. I have a computer which I wish to use soley as a Pianoteq host. It is an Acer Aspire with a ".0 Ghz Dual Core processor. I have tried Ununtu, Ubuntu Studio, KXStudio and as I write am downloading Linux Mint 14 Xfce as it claims to be light weight and low on system resources.

My question is this, what would be the best distro to run the software instrument, "Pianoteq" only?

Thank you,

Kindest Regards,

Chris

Personally I'd go for Lubuntu (Ubuntu + LXDE) or even lighter. Or maybe Debian Wheezy + LXDE. You could even try running just X with Pianoteq, that's possible too with some tweaking.

I'll let you know how I get on,

Welcome!

Don't forget to add your username to the audio group and disable CPU freq scaling (set to "performance"). Also, you will need to install qjackctl and setup jack for low latency (256 frames per period should be enough, I think). Start the jack server before launching pianoteq.

After having installed Lubuntu and many futile attempts to install an RT Kernel, I decided to google for a distro which already included one. I settled on Puppy Studio and after initial setup, downloaded and installed PianoTeq 4 PRO. Only minutes ago I connected my E-MU 0202 Sound Card and E-MU MIDI to USB interface, opened up PianoTeq and voila, all seems well. No sign of those hideous Xruns! I will test further and report back. Again, thanks for all helpful posts - truly appreciated.

Kindest Regards,

Chris

After playing for over an hour, I'm delighted to report 0 (zero) Xruns :D
Happy Christmas to all,
