If you accidentally route, say, master out in jack to master in and also into playback, you'll get multiplying noise. Nasty!!!!
Of course, usually this can happen with a complex set up, with buses and such stuff being routed together into a complex net.
Anyway, I wonder what happens if you just leave this feedback loop running. Will it blow up your computer?
Did you ever create a nasty audio feedback loop?

Congratulations, creating a feedback loop in JACK is a right of passage. I don't think it will harm your computer per see, but it might not be the best thing for your speakers. Also, I have it on good word that feedback is very capable of turning an innie belly-button into an outie so use it wisely!

I wonder if it is possible to somehow automatically detect this and cut it off.

As mixtape said: a rite of passage. You cannot be a true JACK routing Jedi without having created feedback loops. The force is strong in us, but we must not harm equipment deliberately. I once ruined my headphones with wrong routing and turning the volume up too loud. Bear my accident in mind, young Louigi, and your speakers shall be unharmed.
The more it stays the same, the less it changes
